An engaging proposition

Today’s leaders face a real challenge. We know that employee engagement is essential to success, but levels are low and falling.1 The old communication strategies clearly aren’t working.

We formed Inside Story to help organisations improve employee engagement and productivity. Drawing on the science of influence, we help leaders to ignite engagement, navigate change and inspire performance.

Storytelling is at the heart of our approach because a strong leadership narrative is essential to engagement.2 We believe that the oldest communication tool of all is still the most powerful.

From individual presentations, to company wide campaigns and programmes, Inside Story can help you to communicate in a truly engaging way.

OUR STORIES

Lee Farnsworth – Head of Consultancy

I began my professional life as a hapless molecular biologist. I discovered that I was better at communicating science than doing it.

Leaving my pipettes behind, I joined the pharma industry. I spent almost twenty years in strategic marketing and leadership. Over those years, I began to incorporate more and more storytelling into my leadership approach. I saw first-hand the difference that true stories made.

Outside of work, I began to tinker with creative writing. Three years ago, I started to write a novel about a hapless biologist (where did that idea came from?).

Perhaps I’m a little more susceptible to story than most. However, my own experience and the evidence from neuroscience have convinced me that stories are powerful agents of change.
Early on in my career as a graduate engineer I faced the realisation that attention to detail and following rules were not particular strengths and endless curiosity was not always valued.

From those early eventful days in the fireworks factory, the following 25 years have been a journey of exploration into what makes people tick (and not in a nervous way). Through various leadership roles across a number of industries I began to understand the power of communication, the importance of mindset and the value of truly listening to people.

Now as a coach and trainer I enjoy finding the stories that connect and inspire people to do great things...
When I was 14, I thought I wanted to be an accountant.

I studied Business and French at University and I learned about accountancy, French, and accountancy in French. I decided I didn’t want to be an accountant. In any language. So I joined the pharma industry and after various sales and marketing roles I decided I wanted to be an ‘entrepreneur’ because that meant I could try lots of different things. Trying different things is fun and challenging. I was very good at some things and very bad at others. My kids remind me of this on a daily basis.

My professional passion is communication, in all its guises. What I’ve realised over the years is that, without question, the most engaging piece of communication has a story at its heart. And that’s why I’m here at Inside Story.
